Things will be much different this time around if slaughter houses reopen on US soil. At least, that’s what Slaughterhouse Sue and her posse would have us all believe. Despite admittedly not owning a horse, handling horses or even liking them all that much beyond how they taste, Ole Sue is going to save the entire equine industry! With her partners in blood lust, Captain Douchebag Duquette, Holy Mother Theresa Manzella and Mindy `Puppymill’ Patterson, they are going to accomplish what countless professional horsemen that have dedicated their lives to the wellbeing of all things equine have not. Any day now, they will have super hero outfits. I just know it!!
Historically, slaughter on US soil has been anything but humane for our equine friends. They have been brutally handled and tortured and calling it `harvesting’, `processing’ and even `euthanasia’ does not change the horrors countless horses have been subjected to. Sue and her butt monkeys will tell you that Kaufman, Texas never happened and it was only a self-serving mayor and a bunch of animal rights activists that closed down that slaughter plant. Yes, and many Nazi war criminals claimed the holocaust was a myth too. The only assurance we have really heard from Sue is that these will be state of the art facilities and there will only being `minimal’ suffering involved for the horses. Funny word `minimal’ is. It’s not really measurable. It’s also not even close to good enough.
Slaughterhouse Sue likes to toss Dr. Temple Grandin’s name out quite a bit. According to Suey, Dr. Grandin will be designing these new facilities and making them `humane’ for horses. Grandin has an outline for humanely processing horses as well as her concerns for equine welfare should these plants not open, on her website. http://www.grandin.com/humane/questions.answers.horse.slaughter.html. I think the most important part of her document is her measurement for welfare, and this is where Slaughterhouse Sue’s plan goes down the toilet. This is directly from Grandin’s webpage:
- Percentage of horses rendered insensible with one shot from either a captive bolt or a firearm. Minimum score 95%, excellent score 99 to 100%.
- 100% rendered insensible before hoisting.
- Falling score 1% or less body touches the ground during handling.
- No electric prods.
- No acts of abuse, such as beating, slamming gates on horses, or poking sensitive areas
I have read Temple Grandin’s book `Animals in Translation’ and I recalled what she considered humane for her audits to have some minor differences. So, I dug the book up and here is the woman herself wrote about her own animal welfare audits in meat processing plants:
- Percentage of animals stunned, or killed, correctly on the first attempt(this has to be at least 95% of animals)
- Percentage of animals who remain unconscious after stunning (this must be 100%)
- Percentage of animals who vocalize(squeal, bellow, or moo, meaning `ouch!’ or `you’re scaring me’) during handling or stunning. Handling includes walking through the alleys and being held in the restraining device for stunning(no more than 3 out of 100)
I think any of us that have handled horses in unfamiliar and stressful surroundings, that get separated from their buddies, know they can be pretty `vocal’ about it. I find it interesting that Dr. Grandin decided to omit this from her write-up about horse slaughter in April of THIS YEAR, when she clearly felt differently in 2005 when she published Animals in Translation. Hmmm. Well, she was mostly discussing cattle in that book, so perhaps she doesn’t think horses should have their `voices’ heard as much as other livestock. I did not change the wording or omit any of her bullet points. This is part of the animal welfare audit she created for the USDA. If you don’t believe me you can check the book out of your library and look it up on Page 267.
Now, let’s talk about the slaughter plants in Canada. Hopefully, most of us realize that Canada isn’t exactly a third world country. These plants have been audited by Grandin in the past and are the very ones that everybody’s favorite horse killing, non-profit scamming, rescuing Christian, Theresa Manzella toured to get her jollies and report back on how wonderful they were. Of course Manzella couldn’t manage to get herself there prior to the line being shut down for the day and didn’t see a single animal killed, but still managed to give a glowing report on the Fort McLeod, Alberta slaughter-house. She mostly seemed impressed with their color charts and filing cabinets, so I’m still not really sure what that has to do with slaughtering horses, but whatever turns her on..She does mention that this was the very facility that Dr. Grandin visited about 10 years ago and made recommendations to. Of course it also happens to be the same facility that was secretly videoed absolutely torturing animals and not meeting Grandin’s standards at all.
Here is Holy Mother Theresa’s little school girl report on her visit to the valley of death:
Incase you needed to be reminded, here is what really goes on at the Fort McLeod slaughter-house:
So, right now Slaughterhouse Sue is promising that these plants will be the best plants in the entire universe and it’s going to be nothing but a warm fuzzy hugfest as they execute up to 300 of our equine friends a day. Given all the conflicting information, video evidence, along with the track record of the bumbling fools that are at the helm of this movement, I’m not sure how anybody can think that a single thing will be different this time around. There is no way in hell the USDA Inspectors are going to be able to monitor this. They can’t even properly monitor the horses being shipped out of the country and look how long it took them to finally get something done about Dorian Ayache. I have a suggestion for anybody that thinks `minimal’ suffering is ok and that is to place their hand in a pot of boiling water for 30 seconds. That is far less time than it takes to deliver the second, third, and however many shots it takes to kill some of these horses and even less time than it takes for the horses that are conscious when they are bled out to die while being hung upside down by a hind leg. Is that `minimal’ enough for you????
