Since we’ve spent our last few days pointing, laughing and shaking our heads in disgust, I thought it would be a good time to clarify a few things. We have some new readers and even a few `pro’ people that follow this blog for other reasons than drama and taking information back to their bat caves. I’ve kinda gone over all this before, but it’s time to do it all again. It’s time to go over the `whys’ of this blog. Maybe it will stop some of the whining, but probably not. Mostly, it’s because I have some other stuff in the works, but with this being a busy time of year, I haven’t had time to flesh everything out yet. I have a few other things in the pipeline I’m just waiting for a few facts to come in. I sure wish there was a team of me…..Sadly, I am just one person and I am none of the people the PSAs have said I am. I do apologize to the people that get accused of being me.
As I’ve stated, I’ve always been anti-slaughter. I have never for one second of my life considered horse slaughter to be a humane or viable choice. I also don’t care for sport hunting, leg hold traps, fur farming or most Big Ag practices. I am anti-cruelty. I will never be anything other than that. Here in the real world, most people know that about me and accept that. They don’t try to sway my view and they sure don’t deride me for it. I also don’t do that to pro people I meet in my day-to-day dealings. When the conversation arises, I am well able to articulate my reasons as are many pros. The big difference, is that the majority of the pro people I have spoken to are only pro because they haven’t dug deeper or thought things through. They certainly haven’t watched any of the footage from slaughter or even looked at the pictures and they don’t want to. They are pro because they have somehow been able to distance themselves from what slaughter really is. Some of them do it by calling it stuff like `processing’, `humane disposal’, `harvesting’ and the most bizarre one yet….`equine recycling’. Invariably they do not want to call it slaughter because of the connotations attached to the word. I like to call it slaughter, because that is what it is. If you’re going to believe in something or support it, at least have the stones to call it what it is. As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve changed a few minds with some people….others we have just agreed to not talk about it. I have never and will never sell a horse to a pro-slaughter person and yes, I do ask that question.
All of this brings us to the slaughter issue as it plays out online, whether it’s on Facebook, message boards or blogs. The internet has brought us many good things in life, but it has also allowed ignorant people to gather in large groups. The Pro side of the slaughter issue online is astonishing in its ignorance. They think that there is no way that you can know anything about horses or be `industry’ if you aren’t pro-slaughter. Yet, having looked in at the very ones that think this do you know what I see? I see failed trainers, backyard breeders, abusive assholes and a whole bunch of people that don’t know their ass from a hole in the ground. I’ve yet to see one active and successful trainer get up on a stump for horse slaughter. Maybe one or two has been or never was types, but not a single decent and respected horseman. What does that tell you? They think if you are anti, you don’t believe in a horse earning its keep. They think if you are anti, you must be a vegetarian. They think if you’re anti, there is no way you make your living from horses. You know what I think? I think they’re jealous. I think that if they’re truly pro, they’ve never had a true partnership or connection with a horse and that’s pretty sad. I’ve had horses pay my rent and put groceries on my table far more often than not and I haven’t had to send a single one to slaughter to have that happen. Go figure…
The other thing the online slaughter issue has given is unabated fuckery from the PSAs. They have turned this entire issue into a war of Us vs Them. The fact that the welfare of an animal that most of us profess to love is what is at stake never seems to cross their minds. I find it a bit scary that so many of the online PSAs are so vehement about slaughtering horses that they refuse to look at facts. Facts like that in all the years we had horse slaughter facilities, there was still neglect, cruelty and abuse of horses. Slaughter never fixed it in decades and decades, yet they expect the closure of slaughter-houses to fix all the problems in under five years. Facts like the economy failing in the same time frame probably having everything to do with the state of the horse industry, just like in the 1930’s. Facts like the availability of domestic slaughter actually encourages over breeding and brought us to this mess during an economic crisis. Facts like the whole horses not being raised as food animals and the upcoming deadline from the EU. Those things are far too abstract for the online PSA contingent. So, rather than face up to the facts and work within our current reality, they are stuck on one solution only. Slaughter horses.
So, that brings us to the whys of THIS blog. There are countless slaughter blogs out there and there is a ton of information available to anybody that seeks the truth. I try my best to post relevant links whenever possible. Opinions are great, but facts are even better. Even though I’ve always been anti, I have always felt it was my responsibility to be educated. As a result I’ve read and seen some very unpleasant things. I still go and check out things as they come up because every time I see a picture or footage of a slaughter plant, it helps steel my resolve to see this through until domestic slaughter is no longer a threat to any horse. At the same time it’s heartbreaking and depressing to constantly be bombarded with this issue. I would love nothing better than to live in a happy bubble with my own horses and never have to think about slaughter again. That’s not reality. So, I choose to take a lighter side of the issues at times. Our regular Friday and Sunday features are probably the most popular ones on here. The online PSAs truly are a ridiculous bunch and sometimes you just have to point and laugh. It has also been very effective in getting a lot of them to just STFU or driving them out of sight. There are a fair number of people out there that are on the fence and trying to make up their mind on this complex issue. I want them to have the facts, not the paranoid delusions of the dunce club, when they seek out information. I want them to see how ridiculous this pocket of slaughtephiles truly is, including their `leader’ Slaughterhouse Sue. I want the rest of the anti slaughter people to laugh and then go out and fight the good fight for the rest of the week. I’ve used this quote before, but it’s very appropriate to why I write this blog the way I do…
“It is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you will not be imperiled in a hundred battles; if you do not know your enemies but do know yourself, you will win one and lose one; if you do not know your enemies nor yourself, you will be imperiled in every single battle” ~ Sun Tzu – The Art of War
The good news or bad news, depending on who you are, is I am not going to change a single thing. I will write about whatever strikes my fancy at any given time. If you’re going to fly your freak flag in public and be a giant asstard, I’m going to call you on it and hopefully we’ll have a laugh at your expense. I get a huge kick out of seeing them think they know who I am and attributing this blog to some of the commentors on here. As far as I know only Mendy Tobiano and the PSAs are the ones that have multiple identities and like to talk to themselves to make it look like they have support. I don’t have to. I am only myself and I am NOT on Facebook. I love the comments we get on this blog and I truly appreciate the emails I get too. Ok, I don’t really appreciate the PSAs that email me pretending to be anti and seeing if I’ll give up sources or run with a false story they feed me. I always check my source, so just stop it. If you want to make this`Us against Them’, go right ahead. I can only speak for myself, when I say I don’t see it that way. I’m in this FOR the horses. However, if they want to position themselves as the enemy, then that is how I’ll deal with them. The PSA crowd are just merely in the way and I’m going to continue to laugh at their expense and feel sorry for their animals. Now, let’s get back to business tomorrow!
