As you all know, the PSAs like to tell anybody who will listen that slaughter beats starvation and that having horse slaughter available will mean no more neglect and abuse for horses. It’s all about their welfare and saving the horse industry. Nothing new there, right? They paint horrific pictures of herds of horses being booted out onto barren lands that end up starving to death and for some reason many of them claim that they wake up and find strange horses in their fields or tied to their gates. That’s something I find odd as we have a really nice place and nobody drops off free horses for us….EVER. I’ve never heard of it happening to a single person I associate with either. Oops, I lied. Many years ago our neighbors woke up to a horse in their barnyard. My friend was all excited because she thought she got a new horse as a surprise, but it turns out another neighbor’s rather well fed horse had gotten out of his pen at night and decided to pay them a visit. She was pretty bummed out about the situation too. Anyhow, the other thing slaughterphiles love to spout is that all us antis are actually city folk and none of us are actually making our living from horses or know much about them. Even if that was true, which it is far from, most of us still pay taxes and it’s tax dollars that fund inspections so that means you get to have an opinion regardless of your ownership status. That’s just the way things work and I don’t feel like going back and forth on it too much today. What I want to talk about or show you all, is what slaughter won’t’ fix. The title of this blog entry is rhetorical unless an actual slaughterphile has the stones to address what we’re going to look at today.
I’ve been saving a few things to use for our Sunday PSA features if I ever get around to writing one again. However at least one of the poster children was probably going to be too easy of a guess and I think now would be a better time to look at some of these pictures. The first PSA we’ll talk about is probably no stranger to many of you. We’ve mentioned her here several times as she is somewhat of a bully and takes great delight in trolling the internet picking fights with anti-slaughter people. She considers herself somewhat of an authority on all things equine and gets positively moist at the prospect of slaughter. In fact, she’s so successful in the horse business, she works at Wal-Mart. Yup, we’re talking about none other than Jamie DeHart.
Ms. DeHartless considers herself to be a breeder among other things. I’m not referring to her sexual orientation, but to the fact she basically breeds anything with a uterus. Naturally, she is barn blind and considers her stock to be of great quality. Before I show you some of the efforts of her breeding program, I should note that don’t only like purebred or high-end horses. I like all horses. I’ve had some less than classically beautiful horses myself and they were great horses. What I didn’t do with them was breed them to make more. I’m also not anti-breeding. I am, however, very particular in what I believe should be bred. I don’t think any horse should ever be bred unless you know, realistically, exactly who is going to want that foal and what it’s job will be. If you want to breed your grade mare to your neighbor’s Pintaloosa Spanish Swimming Horse for sentimental reasons, then I hope you plan on keeping that offspring should it turn out to be the trainwreck it has a good chance of being. So let’s look at Dehartless’ breeding stallion and some of the offspring, shall we?
Ok, so you get the picture of this PSA’s awesome breeding program. Every breeder will eventually end up with a foal that didn’t turn out as nice as they hoped despite every base being covered. However, it seems like all of DeHartless’ babies are conformational train wrecks and they also seem to be sadly lacking groceries. I’m going to assume that all but one are by the Appy shouldbeagelding. She has a few Arabian stallions as well. Speaking of her Arabian program, perhaps we should look at her sale horses….
Some of Dehartless’ sale horses aren’t even all that bad looking……if they had some groceries in them. It also would appear from all her horses she may want to adopt a worming program. Now, before people start screeching that her skinny little horses show why we need slaughter it’s probably important to note that she is selling them to make room for MORE horses. She is not selling them because they all look hungry, she’s bringing more in for `training’, which we’ll take a look at another time. If anybody is sending horses to this person for training, they need their head examined. However, I’m a little surprised that she would want to bring back slaughter and have her horses priced by the pound as she’d be in pretty big trouble. Just like Dorothy Robertson, she seems to have a bad case of barn blindness as far as what the actual dollar value of her horses is and apparently $3550 is a magic number or something. Moving right along…..
See the cute little gray horse up above? He likely shipped to slaughter on Sunday. It seems this poor animal was picked up a few years ago as an unbroken 2yr old colt by a horse trading PSA named Nicole Ziemann. She at least gelded him, but that’s about it. It seems he pimp slapped her into the ground while she was trying to deworm him and injured her, so she offered him up on a Facebook page for free, but with no papers or coggins. Here is her statement about the situation, or at least her revised statement as she kept deleting them..
This is typical PSA bullshit. Even if they horse was untrainable, and I have my doubts, it’s about making sure he suffers for what he did to her. I guarantee that horse won’t be thinking about the error of his ways as he’s standing in a kill box sliding around on a bloody floor. I also think if a horse freaks out `out of the blue’ there is usually a reason for it. I had one that was very used to having it’s mouth handled almost lose it when we went to check a tattoo. Turns out there was a sliver in his upper lip that had abscessed. As soon as that was taken care of, he was back to normal. In this poor thing’s case, it sounds more of a case of somebody being in way over her head and not being able make any money on him. He was sold at one point last year but the sale never went through. At any rate, she’s playing coy on what really ended up being this horse’s fate.
“Update on Soot/ALPO: He left with someone who said they could “fix” him, but the guy immediately turned around and offered him to every KB/Horse Trader for $300 so I am not going to speculate on where he will end up…
BTW Thank you for looking through all of my public albums, after all that is why they are public, I do not hide the things I do after all, but I also do not beg crazy cat ladies on SSI for their last dime to “help” all the pretty ponies.”
Oh and just in case you had any questions about her horse husbandry practices, take a gander at the conditions she keeps them in. She says she realizes the stall is filthy, but no big deal because the horse only sleeps in it. Ok then…
I could post pages and pages of PSAs and how they treat their animals. I think the two I’ve featured today are, sadly, quite typical of many of them. Both consider themselves knowledgeable and both are abusive asswads. They both think slaughter is awesome. All PSAs like to lay claim to the words `animal welfare’ and `horse industry’ and I’ve seen evidence of neither. They are right about one thing though, if everybody that owned horses behaved and treated them like they do, then slaughter probably would be needed. Again, I will stand by my assertion that if people like this get out of the business all together, we’d be a long way towards solving the abuse and neglect these assholes keep whining about.
