As we are all well aware, the biggest reason for slaughter given by the PSA brain trust is that it is a way to deal with `unwanted horses’. According to them, slaughter keeps all these mystical beings from wandering the streets and becoming a menace to society and a drain on our tax dollars. Of course PSAs like Naughty Tobiano want us all to believe that kill buyers are just super nice guys trying to earn a living. They would never send good horse that had a use to slaughter. Instead, they just hang out at sales and pick up all these unwanted horses and `recycle’ them for a new purpose. Doesn’t that just make you all warm and tingly inside?
Do you see the horse above? He was slaughtered at Les Viandes de la Petite Nation January 8, 2013. He was anything but unwanted. His name was Backstreet Bully and he was originally bred and owned by Adena Springs and raced under Stronach Stables. As many of you are aware, Adena Springs is owned by Frank Stronach and they have been leaders in the movement in finding new careers for retired racehorses. They have an entire division devoted to retired racehorses and have taken this commitment very seriously. Backstreet Bully wasn’t a great racehorse but he was graduate of their program. Here is the write up about him from the Adena Springs Retirement Program prior to him being sold:
“Backstreet Bully is a kind 4 yr old, 16hh OTTB chestnut gelding. He was retired from racing September 2008. He is a solid loving horse with tons of puppy dog personality. He’s got a great sound mind, willing attitude and is very well mannered; he just loves to be loved. He has been ridden both english and western walk, trot, canter and hacks out quietly both alone and with company. We have started basic Parelli training with him. Backstreet bully will make an excellent pleasure horse. He has no vices or bad habits. He trailers, cross ties, clips and is never a problem for the vet or blacksmith.”
Somewhere along the line, something went badly wrong for Backstreet Bully and he ended up in a kill auction. Details about what happened are still coming out, but every effort was made by Transitions Thoroughbreds and Adena Springs to save this horse. This is a quote from Transitions on their Facebook page about what happened at the sale:
“He was pointed out to me at the auction by an employee thereof as she knew I was there to buy tbs – I tried to buy him – my bid was not taken, perhaps not seen – I tried to buy him after from the kill buyer and was told no – he was meat only. He was not eligible for slaughter and it begs the question of why the very person who does the paperwork on every horse running through that auction would specifically point him out to me and describe him so that I could bid on him at that sale to buy him would do that if he was meat only as that would be something she would need to put on that kill sheet. He was NOT announced as meat only either in the sale ring. I tried to stop it again, I got no response, I contacted his connections who ARE on my list of people who most definitely do NOT want their horses going to slaughter and they took immediate action. His faxed drug records clearly proved he was not eligible. Everybody knows that all tbs have most definitely had at least bute amongst other drugs if they have raced – he was not eligible and he was killed for nothing!!”
I’m still trying to patch together all the details from various postings I have seen, but I do know this much….this was not an unwanted horse and this was not a horse that should have been slaughtered for meat or any other reason. This horse was still alive when his drug records were faxed to the slaughter-house. The slaughter-house was well aware they were in possession of a horse not suitable for slaughter for human consumption and that there were people wanting to bail him out. Remember, PSAs tell you it’s all about not wasting the unwanted horse’s meat. Well this horse was far from unwanted and he was most certainly not suitable for human consumption, but Les Viandes de la Petite Nation went ahead and slaughtered him anyhow just because they could. What purpose did that serve? The response of the CFIA vet in attendance at the slaughter-house, after she was informed of this horse’s drug status was “We (LPN) would have a lot of horses here and what would we do with them all?” I gather that statement was in reference to how many horses they have that are not suitable for human consumption. What DO they do with them all?
I have no personal connection with any of the people involved with Backstreet Bully and his sad end. If they choose to come forward and fill in some details, that’s great but I will leave it up to them. They are heartbroken over this and I don’t know what more they could have done. I haven’t seen the name of the person who adopted Backstreet Bully nor do I know if it is the same person that dumped him at this auction. What is important is that despite the fact that this horse should have never been at that sale in the first place, he seems to have been slaughtered out of spite. People tried hard to rescue this horse. They tried to buy him in the ring, they tried to buy him before he went on the truck. They informed the slaughter-house, backed up with vet records, that this horse should not be in a slaughter pen and they still went ahead and did it just because they could. Yeah, kill buyers are great guys and slaughter is just for horses that nobody wants. Rest in peace, Backstreet Bully. We won’t let them forget you any time soon……
*UPDATE ON THE NEVADA 34*
Word has it that Dorothy Robertson took a plea bargain today. She plead guilty to 5 counts and will get community service for each count and do 30 days in jail total. That’s not even close to enough punishment for a third time offender, but at least it’s something. I’m away for a few days but will update more details when I get back. Have a great weekend, everybody!
i guess they lied when they said they weren’t taking thoroughbreds anymore then? assholes
Different plant, but still disgusting. 😦
What is the solution to all this? It appears that ‘civility’ certainly has no effect! Events like this sew the seeds of revolution. Why is it that the only thing that some humans seem to grasp is if they are forcefully dealt with? It would seem that the only solution is to take steps to ensure that the asstards involved with this ‘murder’ are never able to do such again. This is a ‘perfect’ example of an event that drives some ‘over the edge’ to take matters into their own hands leaving the ‘system’ to wonder why? DOH!
~”The belief in a supernatural source of evil is not necessary; men alone are quite capable of every wickedness.” – Joseph Conrad~
Obviously, the solution we”d all like to see is no slaughter available anywhere. For now, I really don’t know the answer. Despite the original connections doing everything humanly possible, within the law, to save this horse from slaughter they still execute him. They did so knowing this horse would not be suitable for human consumption and that people were willing to pay to remove him from the kill pens. It’s not like they only rolled up to the slaughter-house making demands. they attempted to buy him in the ring, and then tried to buy him out back. That KB was determined to kill this horse for whatever reason. What happened to Backstreet Bully was a perfect storm of pure evil on several fronts. I wish I knew the answer. Your quote is quite accurate as always.
so true..i have only to go through my newsfeed and see examples of evil everyday. the horror inflicted on animals, not just horses, is infinite
This story just breaks my heart. I’m so sad for those people, and I hope some sort of justice is found. Usually when I read about kill buyers and those that are adamant supporters of slaughter, I think of ignorance and heartlessness, but not evil. This story has so much spite and hate in it that it hurts.
Also, I just want to call bullshit on that whole, “the kill buyer is just doing his job” thing the PSAs have going. I know the economy is bad, but there are always other jobs. People who argue for “necessary evils” are straight up arguing for evil in my book. It is an excuse to do something you know is wrong (typically for money, personal gain, or just laziness). It’s not idealistic to do what is right, instead doing the right thing should be considered “necessary” good.
I could not agree more, Chance. This was a prime example of just being flat out evil on their part. Boy do I hope someone comes out firing lawyers out of both barrels!
We do need to take action. One Horse Warrior, Mindy Lovell, who saves Canadian horses and is a part of Transitions Thoroughbreds is super upset and wants questions answered about this. This should not have happened. It’s another Canuki and Cactus Cafe incident only without the happy ending….
You are SO on target, Chance! I lived within 40 miles of both the plants that were in Texas, and I KNOW what the kill buyers are like.
I didn’t see this myself, but there were some rescuers who were trying to buy back some horses that the killers had already purchased and loaded up. Not only would they not sell the horses back for more than they were going to get at the plant, they avowed they hated rescuers and actually made not-so-veiled threats. Oh, these guys are real sweeties all right.
I just have no words at the moment. RIP beautiful baby.
The slaughterhouses know that most likely EVERY horse coming up from the U.S. has had bute at some time (exception might be wild horses). Mine have all had bute, previcox, etc. They just do not care. This was clearly spite to snub the rescue community.
Linda:
Exactly!
They did this not out of spite, but out of economic necessity. They don’t want to stop the biz.
It does appear to be solely for spite… Not to mention, someone NOW will be eating tainted meat… But who gives a &^% about that… We got our money, and we made our point…
Brenda Lee:
You confirmed and misunderstood my post at the same time.
The execution of this horse was not about right and wrong. It was about if the killers recognize, acknowledge the fact that equines “leaking” into their system are dirty for meat, the whole system shuts down.
Like I said, this horse is indictment of our ENTIRE food system.
They murdered the horse to not acknowledge the flaws in the HCHS system.
They know it, we have ALWAYS known it…sadly the people eating eat it DO NOT know it.
The so called CFIA “vet” didn’t address the fucking question!
“What to do with ALLLL these horses?” Hey you fucking dumbass vet not doing your fucking job……give THAT horse back to those that were seeking his release OR learn how to humanely euthanize equines the way you were taught at your vet school! You’re an asshole lady! Part of your oath is to do no harm….instead, you did….to the horse and the humans that will eat that meat, you corrupt piece of HUMAN walking, talking SHIT!!!!!!
Somebody in Canada ought to sue her a$$ for malpractice AND get her and every vet at that plant FIRED for ethics violation.
Darrell C: You’re right…the devil didn’t make her do it…..she and all those cruds at the plant CHOSE to do it.
“Amen”! Denise….
Absolutely!
What kind of person goes to all the trouble to go through vet school just to work in a slaughter house? Hardly shocking this one had such an attitude.
SrC:
Many graduates have many reasons to go to the kill floor. In the first place, it is the law that they be there (a vet, that is). Sometimes, large animal vets go there to get started and if they have taken government money for school, they have a limited obligation to public service .
Everyone realizes that most vets graduating are going into small animal medicine/practice or research, right? Many areas, especially rural and government operations are in desperate need of experienced large animal vets as I type.
I don’t have a problem with vets doing this because they are “supposed” to be there to protect the consumer AND the animal. Obviously that is not happening like it should.
As to her criminal attitude, hardly any one wants those kill floor jobs…even the good vets. It is difficult and not rewarding; in fact, whistleblow on USDA, the purveyor and see what happens to you.
A vet or even an MD who works on humans is supposed to “Do No Harm”…assisting or helping with slaughter is harm…No animal should go through this.
Maureeen:
The cultural norm in the US is to eat meat and we are supposed to have a system, with regulations and enforcement to ensure humans aren’t poisoned and animals don’t suffer. Canada is supposed to also.
I am not a vegetarian, and eat less and less meat and NOTHING at fast food. The issue of vegetarianism or being an omnivore is not the issue here. I do understand why many humans choose to be herbivores with some lacto-ova options, sometimes seafood/fish included. The main argument being, if we didn’t have slaughter of animals we wouldn’t have environmental destruction, animal and human suffering or corporate control of the world’s food and resource system.
Maybe we will get there some day…but not now or next year. We can certainly advocate that the meat eater system does it properly and with a guarantee of purity for the consumer (btw, no guarantee with veggies either).
Dealing with KBs and the CFIA, ect is so upsetting, believe me!
ALL those replys we get back from the letters we send to the CFIA, are all “Lies” “Lies” “Lies” and “Contridiction” !
Can,t this (CFIA) Vet,s name be announced? Something terribly wrong with the whole picture, always did, always will… tks for sharing this story & facts.
~RIP~ Backstreet Bully
Mindy Lovell and her Transitions Thoroughbreds saves many horses each week from the auction, KB and on the extremely rare ocassion, from the plant (i.e. Cactus Cafe and Canuki). Please support her efforts, she is in Facebook, just look up her pages. It is distressing beyond belief that in spite of having everything in place that she needed to save Backstreet, every person along the line, who only needed to say, yes, ok, take him, instead CHOSE to say no, screw you and him both. these are the kinds of people in the slaughter pipeline, who care nothing about horses OR humans. shut them down, please everyone do all you can to just SHUT THEM DOWN.
RIP Backstreet Bully 😦 Life is not fair. May karma get those that did this to you.
I sent a letter to CFIA about this disgusting killing of a unsuitable horse and a horse that had many people trying to get him out of the slaughter pipeline. As a Canadian taxpayer I felt I had to do this. I wonder if I will get a reply?
Awesome, maybe you could rally a few more taxpayers to send message of disgust, and concern to the CFIA…
If you do get a reply, we’d surely like to see it.
They are knowingly, willingly terrorizing a human food chain! This is TERRORISM.
Each time I hear of “one more lost” to slaughter, I can’t help but picture in my mind the absolute terror these poor creatures go through. The U.S. government should be ashamed that we are still allowing this to happen! I am sickened thinking of those involved who might have been doing this “for spite”!! To spite who? Why murder an innocent being? Those involved, and especially the kill buyer who knew full well what he was doing, should burn in hell for what they did! I don’t know how they can sleep at night. Someone mentioned “desperate measures” out of frustration and rage — yep, that’s what it will come to (hint, hint) — stealing these horses that are trying to get adopted from the auction yards; stopping the hauling trucks and removing them, etc. But then, those folks would be prosecuted and the kill buyers and other murderers would still run free! Arrgghhhh!!!!
I think you’re on something there…stealing the horses and harassing the trucks. I heard Paul Watson stepped down from Sea Shepherd due to legal issues. Maybe he can help the horses here in Canada. Someone has to!! I wish I could do something, anything to stop this. It is so frustrating that the government won’t listen to this public outcry to end horse slaughter!!
ARGH!!! IF this were drugs, firearms or ANY other inanimate object.being traded on the market in such a way, breaking the laws so blatantly, the government would shut them down pronto! I just don’t get it! Makes me SO sick too. Our society is SO screwed up.
Ours too.
Thank for this accurate detailed description of what REALLY happens to these brilliant beings. We have to keep getting the truth out to unknowing people, who will not agree with these atrocities. Greed has taken over the minds of these murderers, and their consciences are cold as hell.
The EU, who are the major consumers of horsemeat (may they choke on it) need to be made aware that, AGAIN, a horse treated with banned drugs has made it to their dinner plates. As far as LPN goes, what does one expect from people who kill day in day out and, as we saw in the undercover video footage, do it brutally without care for the horses.
The defiant actions by the vet(s) and slaughterhouse(s) emphasize how this “industry” continues to operate with impunity. If this were any other business (especially a food or human health-related one) this would be front page news. Evidently, the media does not see this as a ratings-worthy topic? Or are they even aware?
Gayle: Also send your letter to our fine Minister of Agriculture, Gerry Ritz.

Stress the potential risk to human health with the killing of animals that are full of drug residue. I’m not sure it will do much. After all it took US inspectors to bring to light the many infractions at the XL Foods plant (E.Coli in beef products) in Alberta. Human safety was the least of CFIA’s worries.
I can’t even find the words to express my outrage over this….
This horse’s demise is the perfect situation to prove that HCHS is not a service, and most assuredly NOT a food purveyor for anything living to consume.
Backstreet Bully…may you become the documented reality of the tainted human consumption horse slaughter business. Dead, but never forgotten…you too Ferdinand, Exceller and all our noble servants sent to die this way and poison humans.
[…] Please read about him here […]
Everyone should go to the poster link and make a comment.
I would only ask that we can get the murder victim’s name correct; is it Broadstreet Bully or Backstreet Bully?
Either way…anything with “bully” sucks and those that named him should have taken more time….but the “takin’ more time” thing is why we are here, right?
We (humans) are so corrupt. What on earth do you have to do at an auction to be noticed and properly acknowledged. It says a lot about the mentality of the kill buyers when they refuse to sell you the horse they just bought for the same price or when an auctioneer ignores your bid. I am not saying auctioneer did see the bidder, but sounds not right at all, and now he is dead via the horrible confusing scary journey to slaughter. These folks have no conscious.
I am so sickened and deeply sad for this precious boy that he should be ” disposed” of this in this brutally cruel and what must have been for him terrifying way.
All I can do is pray for his sweet precious spirit and hope somewhere his darling soul knows he was loved very much and that so many people tried to save him
WE MUST eradicate this violent brutal horse slaughter industry RIP sweetest Backstreet Bully We will always hold you close in our hearts
Don’t get sick over this PLEASE get angry and TAKE ACTION. THE AUCTION HOUSE IS 100% AT FAULT. This auction house can totally be prosecuted for labeling this animal incorrectly for sale, for refusing to take an active bidder and the Food Animal Veterinarian who’s job it is to oversee and label each food animal correctly is also TOTALLY at fault for inaccurately labeling a food animal. You don’t need people to feel bad YOU NEED A GOOD LAWSUIT that gets the public attention to the arrogance that happens every day at these slaughter facilities. The former adopter is also financially liable for violating the terms of the adoption contaract. Adena Springs and their connections should take this concern and sue this facility. They will win the lawsuit and maybe next time the slaughter house will pay attention.
Ditto!!! You must take some kind of action… It does no good, to be offened, or outraged and then do nothing.. They truly need everybodies help… Nothing is to little….
Amen!
I don’t have much money, but if that had been MY horse, there would be lawsuits and more lawsuits even if they did nothing but publicize this criminal horror.
I almost did that anyway to Suey’s dearly departed hubby when he posted on their Facebook page that anti-slaughter advocates were Nazis and are doing to the horses what the Nazis did to the Jews. I’m old enough to remember what REAL Nazis are, and I just about popped my cork all over that lunatic.
Kris, I like the way you think. I’m sure there are some equine lawyers who would take this on gratis. Then, go to all the news stations with the facts. Make some NOISE and get your day in court. Regret and self pity do nothing to change this.
This is a total outrage! This horse had no business being in the slaughter pipeline! All regulations were ignored, so tainted horse meat [because racehorses have drugs in them] will be shipped to Europe. This horse was young and a sweet personality! I feel so bad this horse was killed. There needs to be an investigation. This has to stop!
This horse was sold on a Tuesday and literally the next day was slaughtered..he had no chance!
To the people who have written to the CFIA, unfortunately they are beyond reach. To those who sugested the Auction, The slaughter plant, and most certainely the CFIA VET be sued, be assured the Quebec slaughter house and the CFIA VET are beyond reach. Why, think about this, and i will start from the top Harper, Ritz, Menzies, Redford and Bouvry says it all. Worse BILL C322 does not stand a dam chance of becoming law in Canada, no matter who tells you different. The only way this retched industry will halt in Canada ,is when this Conservative REGIME is removed from office and that is two years from now.MAYBE
The only salvation for these regal animals is for President Obama to sign an executive order that would halt horses from the U.S from being shipped for slaughter. I have been following this barbaric industry for over two years, and a supporter of the CHDC and unfortunately i see no change in the near future.
Hell when you live in a country like Canada that KNOWINGLY permits dog and cat fur imports from the likes of China, and Canada is allowed to ship seal skin to China, you should realize the corruptness that is an intrical part of Canada.
Frankely, i am ashamed to be Canadian.
Dennis:
No one person is beyond reach….it may take time, but it can be possible to “reach out and touch someone”, in many ways (good or bad.
Yes, but Dennis don’t get too discouraged! You know, Bill C-322
has only had first reading, but ya that was a few months ago.
However, the beauty of constitutional law is that anybody can be sued. Everyone that has posted a comment here has to email their local MPP and at least 25 other people they know asking them to do the same and so on and so on. Dennis, just in last 10 days I did receive responses back to me from TNatyshak-CO@ndp.on.ca and also Alex, among others including
dmcguinty@pemier.gov.on.ca https://correspondence.premier.gov.on.ca/en
This CAN be done!!
People suck. Not all, just most. Animals are pure of heart. Humans are not.
Canada is no worse than the US, no matter which political party is in office, horse slaughter continues.
Mindy Lovell with Transitions Thoroughbreds works with the kill buyers on a regular basis there in Canada to help get some of the horses safe. While I am not a fan of working with a kill buyer on a regular basis and I do believe that putting money into their hands is only strengthening their business of killing, I do wonder why Backstreet Bully was not spared like many of the others that Mindy has saved.
This is an important lesson that horse advocates need to learn.. “GET THE HORSES OUT BEFORE THEY REACH KILL BUYER STATUS” The racing industry needs to step up and assure the athletes in this sport safety and dignified retirements for the sake of the sport itself. Allowing this to go on and seeing even ONE more horse die in this manner is shameful and disgusting. We owe them more and we should not be forced in supporting kill buyers and the slaughter industry to save the horses. WAKE UP PEOPLE!
How sad for everyone concerned and Bully had his final ride, the horses are tossed like old shoes. i just got one in the other day that people at a fancy club no longer wanted. so i add him to my collection of regal horses that will do anything for me.
as for the kill buyers, and the auctioneers, yes they did not see you and chose to not notice your bid., that happened to my years ago for a grey arab, i stood up and shouted that the mare was going to be mine and kept standing and bidding until the kill buyer bowed his head. i got a standing ovation and i still have that mare 17 years later.
http;//www.parl.gc.ca/MembersOfParliament/MainMPsCompleteList.
I know that PSA’s troll this blog….so…what do ya’ll think about this….just one of thousands…that end up in slaughter at the hands of the kind and hard working kill buyer who refuses to negotiate for a horse that is clearly wanted? I dare anyone of you to justify this.
See..this is the horror….Backstreet Bully is just one of many with similar and likely more devastating circumstances.
Denise, unfortunately we live in the REAL world, where this retched industry is SUPPORTED by Canadas Prime Mminister Harper, Ritz who is Harpers Minister of Agriculture, Menzies who is a Conservative member with substantial influence, Allison Redford who is the Premier of Alberta where the largest Horse slaughter plant in the world is located, and operated by C. Bouvry.
They are ALL Conservatives, and ALL from western Canada. I can assure you with the likes of these COMPRIMISED POLITICANS supporting this barbaric industry it unfortunately will flourish with impunity.
I live in a country where the few who profit from this industry out weigh the position of the MANY.
Dennis:
It is not inevitable. People can make change.
I look at the current crap with gun control in the US….and these loons scare the shit out of me. That does not mean we, the concerned stop.
The food safety issue will stop this hell for equines. Push it and DEMAND IT! Couple it with marginalizing accepted food inspection and purveyors for the minute HCHS industry….we got them.
I live in a country that could take Satan’s job……doesn’t mean we give up or shut up.
Backstreet Bully ran last in Race10 on Sept.16th, 2008 FORT ERIE, ONTARIO
Race he was entered in was for NW2L(Non-winners of 2 races lifetime) Claimtag $ 4K We’ve seen this a hundred thousand times! A young gelding that is entered in rock bottom races and can’t win that day. All too often, these are the type of the horses in race industry alone on giveaway lists.I wonder if he was on vet list after that last race, as usually thats also often a clue as to who will end up at various auctions at some later point in their life. However, true that Adena Springs is one of the more responsible breeders who tries to do the right thing with their homebreds and runners. People, please write emails to brian.evans@inspection.gc.ca Canadian Food Ispection Agency, tnatyshak-co@ndp.on.ca MPP for NDP caucus
harold.albrecht@parl.gc.ca MPP Kitchener, Ontario
dmcguinty@premier.gov.on.ca why? because is it really a bad thing now that he and company cut off free money from slots to Ontario Racing?
Why should we support it any longer? Also write email to :
inquiry@ontarioracecommission.ca as these officials continue to say and do
nothing about this sick $multi million$ dollar$ industry $ year after year.
Support bill C-322 now.
Backstreet Bully raced nw2L( non-winners of 2 races lifetime) claimtag $4k.
Was he on vets list ? after last race on Sept 16 2008. Does it matter now that he is dead, probably not. However, my experience has been that all too often in the race industry, the tell tale/tail signs are there very clearly- as to which horses will become giveaways on the multi-thousand name list.
Jo-Anne obviously you did not read the complete article- Backstreet Bully was in the Adena retirement program after racing and was sold through that- there were people trying to rescue him – at the auction, after sale and were refused- in his case there were NO signs that this poor baby was not wanted
Actually, Amy I DID read the whole article. I know he was in Adena Springs
retirement program and I wasn’t knocking them! I raced thoroughbreds myself and know quite a few adoptees from their homebred operations. I was simply saying that the many TB’s on watch lists today or rescued in past have shown
the tell tale signs from $RACING BUSINESS $ Perspective, that their continued future on track as running earner becomes/or became questionable. This is common knowledge after you have paid out $$thousands & more $$thousands in training and vet bills etc. This whole situation is exactly why I have 100% ownership of my TB and retire/and keep myself for lifetime!
Circulate bill c-322 petition, support it as much as possible and stay on government until this disgusting, barbaric horse slaughter industry is shutdown.
I am digusted with what happened. Adena Springs horses go out to new families with a contract….this contract was violated.
I would like to see this person before the courts, or at least in small claims court, where, in Ontario, a person can sued for up to $25,000. That might take some starch out of their shorts.
How about naming them!!!
Did this horse go thru OLEX??
If so who was the KB that refused to give him up??
Barbie is the person that fills out the paperwork when the horses come in, was she made aware that the horse was a TB and had raced therefore needed to be flagged on the paperwork.??
Where is the accompanying documentation for this horse, it is Public Domain information in Canada.
CHDC has lawyers that work with them, I hope they can put the perverbial “screws” to the entire chain of people that allowed this horse to be slaughtered.
Lastly the slaughter company and the CFIA need to be held accountable.
….Right, and when Blue pigs fly backwards over the moon, that might happen….
Actually, small claims in Ontario is now at $100,000 and ya poor old or should I say young boy, raced last at Fort Erie. Sept.16th, 2008
I understand that Mindy found him in Ottawa holding pen. I heard last week from a friend at Dr. Footmans (vet) office near Erin, Ontario that the meat buyers were out fiercely at Carsons auction again couple weeks back. Good
thing I wasn’t there. The off-spring filly of a mare I once owned, went thru that
auction and off to Quebec for kill she went soon after that. We were too late.
I never bred her or any animal ever but breaks my heart more when can’t even
save one either!
CFIA and Le Petit (whatever the bullshit pseudonym) have fucked up big time folks. They are dead. History of fact. They process unqualified meat for humans.
I trust that the nonprofit orgs and advocates will publish this far and wide. I trust advocates will educate nonEU countries on this contaminated meat.
This horse has not died in vain…he died to rattle the killers and halls of governments.
Sounds like some type of payback was going on to me
Mary…not payback. This is a decision to ignore for the realities of their flawed business to maintain the business. Thereby, they prove our point that they are NOT a business….they are a criminal enterprise.
It is economics,,,,ugly as it is. They don’t want to admit they are in the polluted shit meat business.
Think about it…everyone.
[…] Somewhere along the line, something went badly wrong for Backstreet Bully and he ended up in a kill auction. Continue reading story here.…. […]
This is exactly why horse slaughter is WRONG and unjustifiable. PSA’s never address these problems that are associated with horse slaughter. Their reasons for supporting horse slaughter are greedy, bullshit reasons. What a heartless bunch of arrogant morons.
More evidence of the complete lack of morality and compassion of PSAs.
Here’s the conundrum for us. The better job we do preventing horses from going to slaughter, the more ruthless lengths they’re going to go to to meet their quotas. We need to make this sordid business illegal once and for all.
A several pronged approach has to be created to actually have an effect on horse slaughter and it has to include the following below
1. Actually get a conviction for kill buyers filling out their own paper work ECT ( fraud) endangering public health
2. Get Canadian Food Inspection Agency into Federal court on charges of PROFESSIONAL MALFEASANCE (re allowing horse into slaughter chain who are full of Bute and or other drugs ( and get a conviction)
3. Massive education public awareness campaign BILL BOARDS EVERYWHERE AND PSA campaign for TV ECT
4. Education and attempt to put the fear of God into Europeans that they are consuming horse drugs when they eat North America horse meat
5. If we could also find ONE case of an European getting sick from eating tainted horse meat this would be good “ ammunition’
6. Support and get through Bill C-544 tabled by Canadian MP Alex Atamanenko Horse Slaughter ban bill
If all the groups got together in Canada and the US and formed an action committee with a Strategic plan plan we could together make a serious dent in this brutally cruel business and possibly getting it stopped in North America Period
!
Even we could find ONE of these issues and retain a group of Lawyers to take Canadian Federal Government to court this is the way to go They would be such a public outcry and media attention given to this, It would go a llong, long way to creating the begginning of the end for horse slaughter
I wish CFAWR had the manpower and the funds we would do this in a heat beat as we are politically driven
As for disposing of unwantedhorses that’s an argument the ( kill buyers)y will never win Prima facie in Court
Don’t forget Mexico slaughters horses and the UK sell horses for slaughter to France Brussels and China all the time
I am from the UK and am ashamed to be British knowing that the UK government does this and sends horses in the most appalling conditions via “ live transport” and for hours with no food or water
This entire brutal business only ” survives” the same way that the bruatlity of factory farming does because of ” the public’s ignorance.” What the public dont know about and cant ” see” gives them as individuals and as a society, no opportunity to act and make choices
Ditto! Bill C-322 now though
I totally agree, but actually DOING these things hasn’t proven to be easy when NO ONE with the power to do anything either doesn’t care or is actually in support. And our government is totally unresponsive to the 80% of American citizens who want this shut down.
Europeans are so ignorant about this situation is utterly beyond belief. I have been sharing posts with someone in the Netherlands. She objected to my anti-slaughter “propaganda” on her page! She didn’t even know bute is dangerous! I’m so disgusted I could chew nails.
Have any of you seen this from the Humane Society International?

seachless. i do not know what to say!
Being involved with the movement to end commercial ‘murder’ of equines since the latter 70’s has given me pause to believe that the system is SO corrupt that it has become irreparable from within. I have come to genuinely fear what I might do should one of my beloveds ever end up as Backstreet Bully has.
I have come to distrust the majority of ‘humanity’. Any individual is suspect until they have clearly demonstrated total accountability and trustworthiness over a considerable period of time. Talk is a cheap commodity these days and I observe more noise than substance from the large majority of the human populace.
I would rather have any and/or all of my beloveds humanely euthanized should something happen to me than see them placed ‘at risk’ in the hands of the majority of people involved in the ‘equine industry’. There is much spoken of love from people who clearly have no understanding of such.
~”Do everything you can [to help suffering animals]. There are no excuses for inaction that matter to the animal.” – Dr. Richard Morgan~
No kidding eh, Darrell. I put down (humanely euthanized) one of my mares a few weeks back – actually Oct 19th, 2012 Came home and cried my eyes out for a week. Cost me $167.00 Canadian money that is and then Dead stock pickup fee. I can 100% totally relate to everything you just said above.
Let’s not giveup all hope that Bill C-322 will gain more recognition and pass
in 2013
I TOTALLY agree.
The simple key to put a halt to this barbaric industry is GETTING OUT A MESSAGE TO THE LARGER PUBLIC. Its common sense, THE PUBLIC CANNOT HALT SOMETHING THEY ARE NOT AWARE OF IN THE FIRST PLACE.
Horse rescue orginazitions IN THE U.S. AND CANADA, HAVE TO COME TOGETHER TO COMBINE FINANCIAL RESOURCES,AND PLANNING. IT TAKES MONEY TO REACH THE LARGER PUBLIC, AND THAT MEANS RADIO, TELIVISION AND BILLBOARDS.
THE POLITICAL MACHINE AND THEIR SUPPORTERS CAN AND WILL BE DEFEATED, WHEN MASSIVE PUBLIC PRESSURE IS PUT ON THOSE POLITICANS WHO HAVE THE AUTHORITY TO HALT THIS INDUSTRY.
Until this happens these comprimised politicans and agencys will continue to operate with impunity.SIMPLE AS THAT.
For petesakes, if there is ANYONE OUT THERE WHO IS INVOLVED IN HORSR RESCUE ORGINIZATIONS IN THE U.S. AND CANADA AND IN A POSITION OF AUTHORITY,” MAKE THIS HAPPEN”
OTHERWISE WE ARE ALL SPINNING OUR WHEELS, by communicating with ourselfs, and talking about how cruel and barbaric this industry is that only exists because of a few comprimised politicans and their supporters.
This was my response earlier but who and how can this effort be spearheaded
?
ANYONE HAVE ANY THOUGHTS ON THIS WE WOULD HAVE TO TALK TO TWYLA FRANCOIS ASP AS THE FIRST STEP

A several pronged approach has to be created to actually have an effect on horse slaughter and it has to include the following below
1. Actually get a conviction for kill buyers filling out their own paper work ECT ( fraud) endangering public health
2. Get Canadian Food Inspection Agency into Federal court on charges of PROFESSIONAL MALFEASANCE (re allowing horse into slaughter chain who are full of Bute and or other drugs ( and get a conviction
)
6. Support and get through Bill C-544 tabled by Canadian MP Alex Atamanenko Horse Slaughter ban bill this year!

Ilive in Canada, and follow politics closely, as well i am a follower and supporter of the CHDC. Simply put the Canadian bill c322, WILL NOT BECOME LAW. Unfortunately we in Canada and are governed by a right wing Conservative Govt. and will be for the next several years. The Prime Minister, Stephen Harper is a solid supporter of Horse slaughter, he sees it as good business. As earlier stated by another individual the Heads of Horse rescue associations in Canada and the U.S. MUST COME TOGETHER AS ONE. THIS WILL PROVIDE A LARGER POOL OF FINANCES, FOR Radio, Telivision and Bill Boards.
The public cannot halt what it is unaware of, and simply put that is our achilles heel.
Please, if someone out there belonging to any association trying to halt this barbaric industry, and in a position of Authority,MAKE ALL THESE HORSE RESCUE ASSOCIATIONS ONE.

Ok Dennis but don’t forget Laureen Harper, Stevie’s wife is/was a horse lover and I bet has a few pics lying around of her days in the saddle. A lot of what you write is accurate for sure, but don’t keep saying its never ever
going to happen- Bill C-322
So sad.
Backstreet Bully had a willing home, and the money was there to buy him from the slaughter robber barons – who – for reasons best known to themselves – chose to harm everybody: The connections, the horse, and the consumers of the toxic residue of his death.
This frustrating tale is more evidence that ending slaughter is an absolute necessity for the horse business, like washing hands after going to the bathroom for restaurant workers.
Any of you Redditors? Too many people are like, “Oh, horse meat’s great!” over there today.
That’s so disgusting 😦
Went to the site and read comments from some REALLY ignorant humans.
I’ll say one thing….obviously our human food system is rife with lies, compromise and failures of even the most basic rules and regulations.; no surprise from me. I have always maintained that the cheating and cruelty of “horsemeat” is an indictment of criminal proportions of our entire food systems.
Good day! I just would like to give you a huge thumbs up for the excellent info you’ve got right here on this post. I will be returning to your website for more soon.
[…] We have heard stories about horses like Backstreet Bully, who mistakenly got tagged for slaughter (https://shedrowconfessions.wordpress.com/2013/01/11/a-sickening-end/)only to end up slaughtered despite his former owner and rescue interests doing anything they could […]
